THE REMANIA PROJECT REACHES ITS FIRST YEAR WITH SIGNIFICANT ADVANCES IN AI-BASED REMANUFACTURING.

09 April, 2026

The REMANIA project – New strategies to extend service life through remanufacturing based on Artificial Intelligence technologies – has successfully completed its first year, consolidating the initial technical and organizational advances of a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening the competitiveness and sustainability of the Basque machine manufacturing industry.

REMANIA is a strategic project within the HAZITEK programme, promoted and led by LORAMENDI, S. Coop., bringing together a consortium of nine industrial and technological entities from the machine-tool and advanced manufacturing sector. Alongside LORAMENDI, the participating organizations include IBERNOVA (Smarttech Industry Software Solutions), ZAYER, WeAreClickers, HISPAVISTA, DOIMAK, as well as the Spanish Association of Machine Tool Manufacturers (AFM), which acts as a key agent in the dissemination, exploitation, and transfer of results to the sector as a whole.

The overall objective of the REMANIA project is to develop new remanufacturing strategies supported by advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, digital twins, and traceability platforms, with the aim of extending the service life of machines, components, and industrial tooling, improving operational efficiency, and contributing to circular economy goals and carbon footprint reduction. The project is aligned with the Smart Industry strategic priority of the PCTI 2030 and with the principles of the European Green Deal.

During this first year, the consortium has focused its efforts on laying the technical and methodological foundations of the project. Specifically, initial activities have been carried out to define requirements and functional specifications, as well as to design in detail the industrial use cases that will guide subsequent developments. These tasks have enabled the identification of critical assets, priority remanufacturing processes, and interoperability needs across the different industrial scenarios addressed by the partners.

In parallel, initial research has been launched in the fields of artificial intelligence, interoperability, and sustainability, analysing the potential of AI models, data platforms, and approaches such as the Digital Product Passport to support decision-making in remanufacturing processes. Progress has also been made in the conceptualisation of solutions for remote diagnostics, remanufacturing-oriented redesign, and efficient process planning, which will be further developed and validated in the next phases of the project.

In terms of management and coordination, project governance mechanisms have been established, with consortium follow-up meetings held and technical and financial control procedures defined, ensuring the proper progress of activities in line with the planned schedule.

With a total duration of 34 months and a global budget exceeding €4.8 million, REMANIA will continue in the coming years to advance the development, integration, and validation of the solutions under research, with the aim of generating real industrial impact, promoting component reuse, reducing costs and emissions, and positioning Basque companies as leaders in advanced remanufacturing of industrial machinery.

This project (reference ZE-2025/00007) has been funded by the Basque Government and SPRI – Basque Business Development Agency through the HAZITEK programme, with co-financing from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
