23 July, 2025The technology center Tekniker, part of BRTA, has developed a real-time AI-based system that automatically detects swimmers and active rip currents. This innovative solution is being tested at Poniente beach in Benidorm (Alicante), as part of the RESAC-OFF project led by Dinycon Sistemas and funded by the Basque Government’s HAZITEK program.
With Spain reporting 741 drowning deaths in 2024—51.8% on beaches—the system provides an alternative to traditional weather and ocean forecasts or manual surveillance. Through computer vision and deep learning, it analyzes images in real time, even under poor visibility, and works without relying on complex infrastructure or constant connectivity.
Tekniker led the AI model development, focusing on an autonomous, energy-efficient, and scalable system deployable on remote or unsupervised beaches. Its ability to trigger immediate alerts makes it a valuable support tool for lifeguards and emergency services.
The project also involves Visual50, Greenresults, and has institutional backing from SPRI. The ultimate goal: to deliver a realistic, scalable, and impactful solution that enhances coastal safety and reduces drowning fatalities in a tangible way.
