SMARTPM IS BETTING ON NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO ENHANCE ITS AUTOMATION PLATFORM

20 October, 2023Born in 2019 in Elgoibar (Gipuzkoa), SMARTPM consistently demonstrates its commitment to technology and research year after year. After unveiling its automation platform for the machining industry called MIC in 2020, it has continued to incorporate new technologies and features to create a disruptive solution that advances automation and intelligent dynamic planning. This commitment has also led to the growth of its workforce, as the automation team has expanded from 5 people in 2020 to 15 professionals in 2023 in this area.

Recently, it has strengthened its network of collaborators through a strategic alliance with the Barcelona-based company Tecnocim, a company with 35 years of experience guiding its clients on the path to digitalization, from the implementation of the first computer systems and CAMs to the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies. "Currently, we are facing an increasingly demanding market in terms of flexibility and costs, a more complex labor market, and the emergence of new technologies applicable to the industry. In this context, collaboration with Tecnocim allows us to bring Artificial Intelligence to the productive sector, which represents a significant advancement in the management of the factory of the future," emphasizes José Castellanos, CEO of SMARTPM.

Therefore, the MIC platform, with the integration of Artificial Intelligence-based capabilities, "connects all the productive assets of the company. It distributes and coordinates tasks to be carried out and makes real-time decisions in the face of various circumstances that may arise, learning from experience to achieve continuous improvements in quality and productivity," explains Castellanos. The solution has already been recognized with the Innovation Award 2022 in the 14th edition of the National Innovation in Advanced and Digital Manufacturing Award organized by AFM Cluster.

At the same time, the Gipuzkoan company is immersed in the research project ADIMERTZ, in which Orona, GH Cranes & Components, EUN, ERREKA, and Hettich also participate, under the leadership of Fagor Electrónica. In addition to the support of various agents from the Basque Network of Science, Technology, and Innovation, such as IKERLAN (a member of the BRTA alliance), Orona EIC, and Egile Innovative Solutions.

Co-financed by the Basque Government through the Hazitek program and the European Union, its main objective is to develop hardware, software, tools, and techniques that facilitate increasing the levels of automation in industrial systems based on AI, Edge computing, and/or advanced control, ensuring self-management and support throughout the entire life cycle of devices and systems.

In this regard, SMARTPM has a clear role within the project: integrating Edge capabilities into the architecture of its MIC platform to, based on a distributed architecture, "strengthen the data capture and decision-making capacity in an agile, flexible, and autonomous manner," emphasizes Castellanos.
