The  ‘Basque Industry 4.0. The meeting point 2017’ Congress gathered around 2,000 people from the business and technology sectors at San Sebastian’s Kursaal last 22th November. Among them, Miguel Lazpiur, who was invited as a speaker to present the company’s latest innovations applied to the automotive sector.

The day began with the institutional welcome from the Lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullo, and the conferences by the Regional Minister of Economic Development and Infrastructures of the Basque Government, Arantxa Tapia, and Krystyn Van Vliet, from MIT, on the consequences of digitalisation. The programme continued with the sectoral applications of industry 4.0 in four strategic areas: Machine tool, aeronautical, automotive and energy.

This sector represents around 80% of the company’s production. Miguel Lazpiur sent the message that Industry 4.0 is not only within the reach of large multinational companies but also of SMEs. And his company is an example of this.

Industry 4.0 is the path to take and we SMEs cannot ignore this reality; we can do it too”, he said. More specifically, Lazpiur, a company that employs around one hundred people, is immersed in three of the five areas that make up Industry 4.0: Advanced manufacturing processes, virtual digital factory and customer-oriented manufacturing.

Lazpiur, with 103 years’ experience, has a strategic plan, launched in 2013, that focuses on Industry 4.0. They work on everything related to their products and the company’s manufacturing means. One of the most recent outstanding milestones is the company’s participation in a project with Fraunhofer, the main technology centre in Europe, located in Germany. It also frequently collaborates with other local platforms, such as IK.4.

The company from Bergara (Guipuzcoa) manufactures three types of machinery: For electronics, machines to inspect fastening elements and customised machines. They also manufacture precision tools for foundry. It is currently present in 25 countries.
